FSB Q2 2026 Small Business Index

Growth hopes hit a record low. What it means for Bromley.

Only 17.8% of small firms expect to grow over the next year. That's the lowest figure the Federation of Small Businesses has ever recorded. Nearly a third (31.6%) expect to shrink, sell or close.

The numbers

  • 55.3% saw revenues fall last quarter, and only 21.7% saw a rise

  • 7.4% plan to hire, while 19.2% expect to cut staff. Hiring intentions haven't been positive since mid-2024

  • 33.6% plan to cut investment, against 15.6% planning to increase it

  • 89.1% face higher costs than a year ago. Tax is the biggest driver, ahead of fuel, utilities and labour

What FSB wants from the new Government: reform of business rates, help with energy costs for businesses as well as households, quick passage of the Commercial Payments Bill to deal with late payment, and an Autumn Budget that puts small-business growth first.

Why it matters here
Most of Bromley's economy is small firms: in our town centres, across the Cray Valley and in our creative and professional services sectors. When they stop hiring and investing, the whole borough feels it. We can't set tax policy. What we can do is keep businesses connected to support, space, investment and each other, and that's what Opportunity Bromley is for.
