Opportunity Bromley launches new scheme to bring vacant commercial properties back into use

Opportunity Bromley has announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at supporting landlords to bring commercial premises that have been vacant for a significant period of time, back into active use to revitalise town centres and boost the local economy.

The ‘Vacant to Valuable’ pilot scheme has been designed to tackle the growing challenge of empty high street units and commercial premises, by providing targeted support to property owners; encouraging them to re-let or repurpose their spaces more quickly and effectively.  With over 80% of vacant commercial premises remaining empty for over 2 years or more; it provides practical support to landlords in a pro-active way and helps create opportunities for new businesses to establish themselves, contributing to vibrant, thriving local high streets.

Supporting High Street Renewal

Vacant properties can have a significant impact on the vitality of local centres. Through this new scheme, Bromley’s Economic Development team in collaboration with existing partners within the local Landlord Forum offers practical assistance to landlords or managing agents to reduce vacancy periods and attract new occupiers/tenants, particularly independent businesses and start-ups looking for office, retail/leisure and industrial spaces.

The initiative forms part of the Council’s broader commitment to support economic recovery and growth, promote entrepreneurship, and enhance the appeal of local high streets

What the Scheme Offers

The scheme is open to a range of commercial property types, including office, retail, hospitality, industrial and service-based units across the borough. Eligible landlords and potential Occupiers/Tenants will be able to access a range of support measures, including:

  • Specialist advice and brokerage support to connect landlords with prospective tenants

  • Marketing and promotional support to increase the visibility of available units and occupiers/tenants seeking new premises in the Borough

Benefits:

  • For Landlords: faster occupation and more consistent rental income; direct introductions to active, pre-engaged occupiers; practical support on positioning, works and lease structuring.

  • For Commercial Agents: access to engaged landlords & priority vacant units; introductions aligned to real occupier demand; co-ordinated approach to reduce duplication and speed deals.

  • For Businesses/Occupiers: access to affordable commercial space, tailored support & advice.

In general, the scheme contributes to a more diverse & appealing local high streets, re-activated commercial units, increased footfall, business activity and jobs; along with a more market-ready property offer to support inward investment.

Encouraging Innovation and Flexibility

The scheme also encourages landlords to consider flexible leasing models, meanwhile uses, and innovative business concepts that can help activate vacant spaces and respond to changing consumer behaviour. By making it easier for new and growing businesses to access physical premises, the scheme aims to create a more diverse and resilient local economy

How to Apply

Landlords or potential Occupiers/Tenants interested in participating in the scheme can find further details by contacting Bromley’s Economic Development team directly

Bromley's High-Growth Businesses come together to Connect and Collaborate

Some of Bromley's most ambitious businesses came together at Bromley Court Hotel recently for an invite-only High Growth networking event hosted by Opportunity Bromley, creating valuable new connections between some of the borough's fastest-growing companies.

Hosted by Opportunity Bromley, the event brought together a group of high-growth companies, creating the time and space for business leaders to share experiences, explore opportunities and build relationships with others on a similar growth journey.

The atmosphere was open and collaborative, with founders discussing the opportunities and challenges of growing successful businesses. Many attendees left with valuable new contacts, fresh ideas and relationships that are expected to continue well beyond the event.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with several attendees commenting on the quality of conversations and the value of connecting with businesses facing similar opportunities and challenges.

One attendee said:

"We continue to be impressed by the work being undertaken through Opportunity Bromley and the positive environment being created for businesses, investors and stakeholders to engage and collaborate."

The High Growth Network is part of Opportunity Bromley's wider business engagement programme, supporting ambitious companies by creating opportunities to connect, collaborate and grow.

Following the success of the event, Opportunity Bromley will continue to bring together high-growth businesses through future networking events, helping founders build valuable connections, share ideas and unlock new opportunities for growth.

Opportunity Bromley connects local businesses with new health and social care opportunities

Around 100 local businesses, VCSE organisations and care providers came together to meet commissioners and buyers, explore procurement opportunities and build valuable new partnerships across Bromley's health and social care sector.

Around 100 local businesses, voluntary and community organisations and health and social care providers came together on 10th June for Opportunity Bromley's Health & Social Care Meet the Buyer event, creating new opportunities for collaboration, partnership and business growth across the borough.

Held at Bromley United Reformed Church, the event brought together local suppliers with commissioners, buyers and major organisations from across Bromley's health and social care sector, creating valuable opportunities to build relationships, explore procurement opportunities and strengthen local supply chains. Representatives from Bromley GP Alliance, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, Change Grow Live (CGL), Excelcare, Peabody Housing, Bromley Third Sector Enterprise (BTSE), and the London Borough of Bromley's Procurement and Integrated Commissioning teams were among those attending, providing valuable insight into future commissioning priorities and procurement opportunities.

Designed as an interactive marketplace rather than a traditional conference, the event enabled attendees to speak directly with buyers, ask questions about procurement processes, explore partnership opportunities and build valuable new professional relationships. Throughout the morning, commissioners and buyers shared practical advice on tendering, commissioning and collaborative working, giving local organisations greater confidence to compete for future contracts.

By bringing buyers and suppliers together in one place, Opportunity Bromley is helping to strengthen Bromley's local supply chain and ensure that more local businesses and voluntary organisations can contribute to delivering high-quality health and social care services. The event also highlighted the growing importance of partnership working in supporting prevention, community-based services and integrated care, while creating wider economic and social value for the borough.

The event generated strong engagement throughout the morning, with buyers and suppliers making valuable new connections and welcoming the opportunity to discuss future procurement and partnership opportunities face-to-face. Many attendees also highlighted the value of gaining a clearer understanding of local commissioning priorities and how to access future opportunities.

The Health & Social Care Meet the Buyer event forms part of Opportunity Bromley's wider programme of business engagement activity, connecting local businesses with new markets, strengthening supply chains and supporting sustainable economic growth across the borough.

Further Meet the Buyer events are planned over the coming months as Opportunity Bromley continues to connect businesses with new opportunities, strengthen local supply chains and support sustainable economic growth across the borough.
